The first cast announcement for the Broadway revival of Once On This Island has been made by producers Ken Davenport and Hunter Arnold. We’re excited to announce Tony Award nominee Phillip Boykin (Porgy and Bess) as Tonton Julian, Alysha Deslorieux (Hamilton) as Andrea, Kenita R. Miller (The Color Purple) as Mama Euralie, and Isaac Powell as Daniel will lead the cast. The revival will play in the Circle in the Square Theatre (235 W. 50th Street, NYC) this fall, directed by Tony nominee Michael Arden, and choreographed by the critically acclaimed Camille A. Brown. Tony Award winner Nikki M. James is set as the Assistant Director. Production is set to begin preview performances on Thursday, November 9, 2017, and officially open on Sunday, December 3.
"Its almost comical trying to express in a paragraph just how much Weaver, and especially the Theatre Department, has changed my life. I have such a vast well of love and connection with what Weaver taught me; the elite faculty and the inspired students gave me the tools to develop my unnatural naturalness; the presence to be present in any given moment; the confidence to set everything free and just 'feel it"; the driving force to question all imagined possibility in a comedy, drama, play or musical; and ultimately a thankful heart, knowing how lucky I was to be able to get the chance to do something that I love. By the end of those four demanding and electrifying years I knew, if nothing else, I was in fact born to perform; being onstage was what I was put into the world to do-- to tell stories--to be a healer. I think of Weaver and the drama department every time before I walk on stage, remembering my roots, and just how grounded they truly made me. Everything in life is an art of choices and I'm still to this day a better person on stage and off because I chose to attend Weaver-- and they by some miracle chose me too!" Jonathan Cobrda, class of 2009, International Tour of ANNIE; off-Broadway in FRANKENSTEIN; and much more!
"Weaver afforded me the experience to mature as person and an artist. The program provides plentiful opportunities for students to develop as theatre performers, technicians, designers, and scholars. The skills I developed while in high school gave me a competitive edge as I sought out leadership opportunities in college; and those same skills gave me a solid foundation for academic success both in the general core and within my major. I entered college with an academic basis for understanding theatre that set me semesters ahead of my classmates. The School of Theatre at Weaver gave me the skills to become a critical analyst, an independent learner, and a well-rounded theatre artist ready to focus my training and my career." Hayden Moses, class of 2012
